CURT Switch Ball trailer balls are a breakthrough in trailer ball technology. As a result of CURT innovation and engineering genius, Switch Balls offer the ultimate in convenience and reliability for a variety of light-duty and medium-duty towing applications. Essentially, a CURT Switch Ball is a trailer ball shank with a removable head. With its exclusive J-groove design, the Switch Ball trailer ball allows different heads or ball sizes to be places on the shank for accommodating different coupler sizes. This means there is no need to switch between ball mounts or even to own a second ball mount to fit an additional trailer. When you need to make the switch, simply twist the Switch Ball head, lift it off and twist on another. The J-groove ensures a solid hold on your trailer, while still allowing for easy removal of the trailer ball without tools or pins. This CURT Switch Ball trailer ball head features a 2" ball diameter and a 1" neck hole diameter. It is constructed from premium-grade steel for optimum strength and has a bright nickel-chrome finish for lasting rust resistance. It is rated to tow up to 6,000 lbs. gross trailer weight and is tested in accordance with SAE J684 for safety.
CURT offers custom trailer hitches, electrical products and a complete line of towing accessories to get you there with confidence and enjoy every mile of the journey.
A trailer hitch ball may be one of the simplest components of your hitch system, but it is also the direct connection between your vehicle and trailer, making it vitally important.
CURT trailer balls are available in a wide variety sizes and capacities. Whether you’re towing a full-size travel trailer or a simple utility trailer, you can rest assured in the reliability of your CURT towing connection.
CURT stainless steel tow hitch balls are a premium option, offering superior rust resistance. They are available in various ball diameters and GTW capacities, and each one features fine threads for improved holding strength.
CURT chrome trailer hitch balls are available in multiple diameters and GTW capacities, and like our stainless steel balls, they also feature fine threads. Their chrome finish over steel gives them solid resistance to rust and wear.
CURT hitch balls with a raw steel finish are intended for heavy-duty towing applications. They range in GTW capacity from 12,000 pounds to 30,000 pounds and feature a heat-treated construction for added wear resistance.
There are four key factors that must be considered when selecting a trailer hitch ball for your towing setup.
1. Weight rating.
2. Coupler size.
3. Hole size.
4. Platform thickness.
To learn more about each of these factors, see the panel below. The diagram to the right shows the various measurements of a trailer ball, which may be referred to in the following sections.
Before selecting a trailer hitch ball, it is important to know how much weight you’ll be towing. Each trailer balls is rated to certain gross trailer weight capacity and tongue weight capacity. The gross trailer weight is the total weight of the trailer, while the tongue weight is the weight specifically at the coupling point.
Remember, your towing capacity is always limited by the lowest-rated towing component, whether that’s the vehicle, the trailer hitch or the tow ball.
The second important factor to consider is the size of your trailer coupler. Many couplers are adjustable, but only within a limited range.
When selecting a tow hitch ball, choose one with a ball diameter that matches the coupler size. It is extremely dangerous to attempt to tow without a matching tow ball and coupler.
'Hole size' refers to the diameter of the mounting hole into which the trailer hitch ball shank is inserted. The diameter of the hole must be no more than 1/16” larger than the diameter of the shank.
If you already own a ball mount or bumper with a mounting hole that is too larger, you may be able to make up the difference using a CURT reducer bushing of the appropriate size.
The thickness of the mounting structure is also vitally important, whether that mounting structure is a CURT ball mount, fixed-tongue trailer hitch or a bumper. The platform must be at least 3/8” thick to be considered safe for towing.
If the mounting platform is too thick, CURT trailer balls are available with a variety of shank lengths, including up to 3-1/2".
